Spain’s Filmax has acquired the international sales rights to the gripping true survival story “Balandrau: Where the Fierce Wind Blew,” just in time for the upcoming AFM.
Inspired by real events that unfolded in the Catalan Pyrenees, the drama is based on the book “Les Tres Nits del Torb i un Cap d’Any” by Jordi Cruz.
The screenplay, penned by Danielle Schleif (“Mediterraneo: The Law of the Sea”), delves into the harrowing events that transpired on Dec. 30, 2000, as a group of mountaineers set out to conquer Balandrau, a challenging peak standing at 8,200 ft/ 2,500 m. What began as a clear and sunny climb took a disastrous turn when an unexpected blizzard hit, unleashing one of the most severe storms ever recorded in the Pyrenees.
Making his directorial feature debut with “Balandrau…”, Fernando Trullols brings his extensive experience as an assistant director on over 25 films, including J.A. Bayona’s “A Monster Calls.” The talented cast includes Álvaro Cervantes (“Deaf”), Bruna Cusí (“Frontier”), and Marc Martínez.
The film is a collaboration between Lastor Media (“Alcarràs,” “The Teacher Who Promised the Sea”), Vilaüt Films (“Alcarras,” “Creatura”), Goroka Contents (“Crims,” “Tor”), and 3Cat, with streaming platform Filmin also on board.
Tono Folguera of Lastor Media expressed the decision to bring this story to life on screen, highlighting its exceptional cinematic potential. The tale of Balandrau resonates with themes of nature’s power, human vulnerability, and collective courage in the face of adversity.
Producer Guille Cascante from Goroka Contents emphasized the story’s enduring impact, leading to the decision to explore it further in a feature film. Trullols was chosen to translate their vision into a compelling narrative, drawing on his expertise to enhance the storytelling.
Filmax’s Head of International, Ivan Díaz, praised the film’s blend of survival thrills and emotional depth, making it a valuable addition to their AFM lineup. A promotional reel will be presented during the market, with plans for a theatrical release in Spanish cinemas by February next year.
Filmax has been actively acquiring a diverse range of films and series, including the musical comedy “Every Side of the Bed,” Basque exile drama “Karmele” by Asier Altuna, and the Basque-language thriller series “Mouths of Sky.” These acquisitions showcase the company’s commitment to showcasing compelling and varied storytelling on a global scale.
