“Gavin & Stacey: The Finale” Sets Record as UK’s Most-Watched Scripted Show
Since its airing on Christmas Day, “Gavin & Stacey: The Finale” has shattered viewing records in the UK. The final episode of the beloved British sitcom, co-created by Ruth Jones and James Corden, has become the most-watched scripted show across all broadcasters and streamers in the UK since records began in 2002, according to the BBC.
With ratings reaching 19.3 million, the show has surpassed its own record set by the 2019 Christmas special, which garnered 18.5 million views in 28 days. On Christmas Day alone, the finale was watched by 12.3 million viewers, marking the biggest overnight ratings for the day since 2008. The total views have since climbed to over 19.3 million, with expectations to surpass 20 million once the 28-day figures are released.
Of the 19.3 million viewers, 4.2 million are in the 16-34 age group, making it the highest young audience for a scripted show since 2002. Jones and Corden expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming response, stating, “‘Gavin & Stacey’ really does belong to the audience and we are beyond thrilled that so many people enjoyed watching it this Christmas.”
Charlotte Moore, BBC’s chief content officer, also praised the show’s success, calling it a “comedy masterpiece” and a true homegrown success story. She commended Jones and Corden for their creation and the emotional impact it had on viewers. “Gavin & Stacey: The Finale” was created, written, and executive produced by Jones and Corden, and was a Tidy and Fulwell73 production for BBC iPlayer and BBC One.
