Find Romantic Beauty With Marie Antoinette Blush

Lisa Eldridge, a renowned celebrity makeup artist and the founder of her own makeup brand, believes that the trend of makeup maximalism and dramatic styles will always have a place on social media. However, she also suggests that there is something special about blush that offers a sense of escapism and fun that can be embraced in real life as well. According to Eldridge, “Blush will always be one of the most joy-sparking parts of makeup application.”

Echoing this sentiment, Pat McGrath, another celebrity makeup artist and the founder of PatMcGrath Labs, emphasizes the importance of finding joy in the ritual of beauty. At Vogue World 2025: Hollywood, McGrath showcased models transformed into French Revolution-era doyennes, complete with vibrant pink cheeks. McGrath believes that after a period of minimalism, people are now yearning for artistry and creativity in their makeup looks.

The Lore of blush dates back to the dreamy Rococo style influence of Marie Antoinette’s beauty routine. McGrath describes Rococo beauty as a combination of fantasy, femininity, and rebellion. Despite the romanticized image of Antoinette’s beauty regimen, it was actually quite extensive. Eldridge refers to Antoinette’s toilette ritual and makeup routine as a “complex political performance.”

During the 18th century, when smallpox was prevalent, women sought ways to conceal the dark marks and scars left on their faces. This led to the use of cream white powder for full face coverage, beauty marks known as mouches, and vibrant blush. For the aristocracy, the color red symbolized status and was applied in large, precise circles on the cheeks.

As beauty trends evolved in the 1780s towards a more natural look, Antoinette began using powder sparingly and toned down the bright rouge on her cheeks. Eldridge suggests that this shift symbolized Antoinette shedding her outward symbols of status as she approached her execution, disrupting the system of Versailles.

In the modern world, McGrath defines “Marie Antoinette Blush” as a focus on an opulent, romantic flush that is delicate yet dramatic. This blush application radiates from the center of the face outward, resembling candlelight or porcelain rather than a contour moment.

In conclusion, the allure of blush transcends time and trends, providing a source of joy and creativity in makeup application. Whether embracing a maximalist approach or opting for a more natural look, blush remains a timeless and essential element of beauty rituals.
