The Visual Effects Society Awards have announced the nominees for this year’s ceremony, with “Avatar: Fire and Ash” leading the pack with 10 nominations, including outstanding visual effects in a photoreal feature. The competition is fierce in the animation category, with three-way ties between “KPop Demon Hunters,” “Elio,” and “Zootopia 2,” each receiving five nominations.
In the television category, “Stranger Things,” “The Last of Us,” and “Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age” are all tied with four nominations each. Last year, Eric Saindon, the VFX supervisor for “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” discussed the challenges of creating realistic fire effects in visual effects. He highlighted the complexity of simulating fire behavior based on different environmental factors.
The nominees for outstanding visual effects in a photoreal feature also include “F1: The Movie,” “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” “The Lost Bus,” and “How To Train Your Dragon.” The VES Awards nominees were selected through a rigorous peer review process involving 60 judging panels across seven regions worldwide.
The event will be hosted by comedy duo Randy and Jason Sklar, with special honorees including Jerry Bruckheimer and Sir Richard Taylor. The awards ceremony is set to take place on Feb. 25 at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
The full list of nominees for the 24th Annual VES Awards includes categories such as outstanding character, outstanding environment, outstanding effects simulations, outstanding compositing & lighting, and more. Emerging technology and student projects will also be recognized at the event, showcasing the next generation of visual effects talent.
