Fire Breaks Out in Tribeca, Damaging Two Art Galleries

On the night of January 22, a fire erupted in a building located at 45 White Street in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood, affecting two prominent art galleries in the area.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) responded to the blaze just before midnight, which originated in the cellar of the seven-story mixed-use building. The fire did not reach the spaces of the affected galleries, but both The Journal Gallery and Asya Geisberg Gallery suffered damages from the FDNY’s efforts to contain the fire.

Michael Nevin, co-owner of The Journal Gallery, stated that they are currently assessing the damage to the space and the artwork within. Asya Geisberg Gallery has not yet provided a statement regarding the incident.

According to an FDNY report shared with Hyperallergic, it took approximately four hours to extinguish the fire. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while responding to the emergency. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Michael Nevin mentioned that he was alerted to the fire by messages from acquaintances around 8 am on January 23. Initially confusing the incident with another location, Nevin expressed relief that their Los Angeles gallery was not affected by the fire.

Despite the challenges faced, Nevin remains optimistic about the future of The Journal Gallery and looks forward to reopening the space once the necessary repairs are completed. He emphasized the importance of resilience in the face of adversity and expressed gratitude for the support received during this difficult time.
