BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

As we observe Fire Prevention Week, we urge every individual and community to prioritize fire safety by implementing crucial measures that mitigate risks and enhance protective protocols. Americans express their gratitude for the unwavering bravery and commitment of firefighters and first responders nationwide who safeguard our lives, properties, and natural environments from the calamity of fire. Collectively, we reaffirm our dedication to fostering practical awareness and preparedness activities to avert fires, ensuring the safety and security of the American populace in the wake of disasters.

In recent times, our nation has faced alarming repercussions stemming from inadequate fire prevention and disaster readiness. Earlier this year, wildfires in California, ignited by arson and worsened by misguided policies and poor forest management, left state and local officials ill-equipped to protect our citizens. Fire hydrants ran dry, and water supplies dwindled. This failure of leadership resulted in at least 30 fatalities, while survivors endured tremendous losses as their homes and belongings were consumed by flames, leading to hundreds of billions in damages.

To rectify such negligence, I proudly signed an Executive Order in June aimed at reinstating reason in wildfire management and response. The directive instructs the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Agriculture to streamline their wildland fire programs, promotes local preparations for wildfire readiness, and mandates the adoption of innovative technologies—such as artificial intelligence and data sharing—to improve state and local wildfire detection and response. Additionally, I formed a Task Force to evaluate the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s capacity to deal with disasters and signed another Executive Order to accelerate support and recovery efforts for Californians, notably initiating the largest hazardous waste cleanup from wildfires in the Environmental Protection Agency’s history.

During this week, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the committed firefighters and first responders who stand strong in moments of crisis. Displaying remarkable bravery, they enter raging fires to offer hope to those in despair and solace to the suffering. Earlier this year, I was honored to sign legislation providing permanent pay increases for federal wildland firefighters. Their bravery and dedication, along with that of local first responders, are vital in protecting our nation’s rich resources and in maintaining resilient communities during tough times. We also express our sincere appreciation for essential infrastructure workers and disaster volunteers for their selfless dedication to helping others in times of need.

As my administration continues its efforts to combat wildfires, we encourage every household to take proactive steps to mitigate risks posed by residential fires—such as developing a fire escape strategy, ensuring smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are functional monthly, and identifying potential fire hazards like unattended cooking, faulty wiring, or overheating appliances.

This week, we commit to providing all necessary resources to safeguard our communities from fire outbreaks, and we express our unwavering gratitude to every courageous first responder who exemplifies the resilience and resolve of the American spirit.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, hereby proclaim October 5 through October 11, 2025, as Fire Prevention Week. I call upon all Americans to engage in this observance through meaningful programs and activities, renewing their initiatives to prevent fires and their devastating effects.
