Norwalk Firefighters Rescue Swan Stuck in Frozen River

In a heartwarming rescue mission, firefighters from the Norwalk Fire Department came to the aid of a swan trapped in the icy waters of the Norwalk River in Connecticut this week.

Equipped with cold-water rescue suits and ropes, the dedicated crew carefully navigated the frozen river on Tuesday to reach the distressed swan. After discovering that the swan’s feet were frozen into the ice, it took them approximately 30 minutes to free the bird and safely bring it to shore.

Initially fearing the worst, the firefighters were relieved to see movement from the swan as they approached, filling them with hope for a successful rescue.

Deputy Chief Jonathan Maggio shared that the grateful swan seemed “just happy to be out of the ice” following the rescue. The swan was promptly taken to a veterinarian center, where it is currently recuperating and expected to make a full recovery before being released back into the wild.

Amidst the recent harsh weather conditions, this wasn’t the fire department’s first animal rescue. In addition to the swan, they also saved a duck and a dog. The successful swan rescue provided valuable training for future ice rescue operations, showcasing the team’s dedication to serving both humans and animals in need.
