Tragedy struck a Honolulu-area neighborhood on New Year’s Eve as a fireworks explosion claimed the lives of at least three people and left 20 others critically injured, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred just before midnight outside a residence, as reported by the Honolulu Fire Department. The neighborhood is situated near the international airport, a joint U.S. Air Force and Navy base, and a short distance from the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial, a solemn tribute to the sailors who perished in the Pearl Harbor attack that marked the beginning of World War II.
Emergency Medical Services in Honolulu stated that two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, with the remaining 20 victims rushed to hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Reflecting on the severity of the situation, Honolulu Emergency Services Department Director Dr. Jim Ireland expressed, “I’ve been in EMS for over 30 years, and this is perhaps one of the most devastating calls I’ve ever responded to in terms of the sheer tragedy, number of patients, and extent of injuries.”
Mayor Rick Blangiardi confirmed a death toll of three and emphasized that over 20 individuals sustained critical injuries in the explosion. He underscored the dangers posed by illegal fireworks, stressing the risks they pose to lives, strain on emergency resources, and disruption to communities.
Authorities noted that several social media posts captured footage of residential fireworks displays across the city on the fateful night. In addition to the tragic incident, four other serious fireworks-related injuries were reported.
The fire department is actively investigating the cause of the explosion and has yet to provide specific details on the circumstances leading up to the accident. Notably, there was no fire reported at the residence, and the identities of the victims remain undisclosed.
