First maps of the sun’s outer boundary may help predict solar storms

Scientists have recently discovered that the sun’s outer atmosphere resembles a pufferfish, thanks to the first verified maps of the shifting boundary between the sun and the rest of the solar system. Heliophysicist Sam Badman describes the structure as a corrugated, spiky shape that changes as the sun becomes more active. The findings were published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters on December 20.

The boundary in question is known as the Alfvén critical surface, which serves as a point of no return for plasma and particles leaving the sun to become the solar wind. This surface essentially marks the boundary between the corona, which is visible during a solar eclipse, and the solar wind. Previous estimates of the Alfvén surface were based on observations from spacecraft located as far from the sun as Earth. However, in 2021, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe made history by venturing below the Alfvén surface for the first time, flying about 13 million kilometers from the sun’s surface.

During its mission, the Parker Solar Probe has made multiple close approaches to the sun, coming as close as 6.1 million kilometers in December 2024. The spacecraft has provided direct measurements of the Alfvén surface, which have been combined with data from other sun-watching spacecraft to create detailed maps of the boundary’s shape and the characteristics of the plasma within it.

The research team has also monitored changes in the Alfvén surface over half of the sun’s 11-year magnetic cycle. As the sun transitioned from solar minimum to solar maximum, the Alfvén surface expanded and became more disordered and less spherical. The team plans to continue studying the surface as the sun returns to solar minimum over the next five years.

Understanding the Alfvén surface of the sun has implications beyond our solar system. Planets that orbit close to their stars, especially those with high magnetic activity, may have Alfvén surfaces that extend far out into space. This could have negative consequences for the habitability of such planets, as they may be entirely encompassed by the Alfvén boundary.

The research on the sun’s Alfvén surface provides valuable insights into the dynamics of our star and its impact on the solar system. By studying this boundary, scientists hope to gain a better understanding of solar activity and its effects on space weather, satellites, and even habitable planets in other star systems.
