Flash mob thefts have made a comeback on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, with a recent incident at the Louis Vuitton store. Around noon, a group of up to 12 masked individuals entered the luxury retailer and swiftly grabbed high-end merchandise, particularly handbags and purses. They then fled the scene in multiple vehicles that raced south on Lake Shore Drive. The estimated loss for the store is reported to be around $150,000.
Shortly after the theft, some of the suspects were apprehended at a gas station on the South Side, with one individual arrested after a foot chase. Police were able to recover some of the stolen items from a vehicle at the scene. As of now, no further arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
During the COVID era, similar raids were a common occurrence, with Louis Vuitton and other stores along Michigan Avenue being frequent targets. The thieves often resorted to overnight smash-and-grab burglaries, using stolen vehicles to crash through storefronts and loot merchandise. The Louis Vuitton store had also fallen victim to this method in the past.
CWBChicago was established in 2013 by residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who were dissatisfied with the inaccurate information provided at local Community Policing meetings. While the coverage area has expanded to include other North Side areas, the mission remains the same: to deliver original public safety reporting with comprehensive context and detail. In summary, the return of flash mob thefts to the Magnificent Mile has highlighted the ongoing issue of organized crime in the city. The brazen tactics of these thieves continue to pose a challenge for law enforcement, but efforts are being made to address and combat these criminal activities.
