A birthday celebration they will always remember.

Four boaters found themselves stranded on a capsized 24-foot sailing vessel for 20 hours during what was supposed to be a birthday fishing trip. The US Coast Guard came to their rescue 26 miles off the coast of Clearwater, Florida on Tuesday.

The group of relatives set out from the Seminole Street Boat Ramp in Clearwater on Monday morning for a day of fishing, planning to return by 4 p.m. When they didn’t return as expected, their family contacted the Clearwater Police Department around 8:30 p.m., prompting a search operation for the missing boaters.

After a harrowing 20 hours at sea, a US Coast Guard plane spotted the capsized vessel at 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday. The distressed boaters were seen waving for help from underneath their overturned boat.

Once located, the Coast Guard plane deployed a life raft and a marine location marker to guide a rescue boat crew to the stranded boaters. The group, ranging in age from 18 to 90, was safely rescued and taken to Morton Hospital for treatment.

After the ordeal, Dennis Woods, the captain of the vessel, shared how the boat capsized and praised his companions for staying calm during the crisis. Despite the difficult night at sea, they all made it back safely.

The successful rescue was a joint effort involving multiple Coast Guard crews and partner agencies. Ensign Gaige Garrett emphasized the importance of having proper safety equipment when venturing out on the water.

Clarence Woods, the oldest passenger at 90, Chris Harding Jr., the youngest at 18, and Cris Harding Sr., who was on the trip to celebrate Dennis Woods’ birthday, all had a memorable experience they won’t soon forget.

As they reflect on their extraordinary birthday adventure, the rescued boaters are grateful to be back on solid ground.

Remember, always be prepared with essential safety equipment when heading out on the water, and rely on the expertise and resources of organizations like the US Coast Guard in case of emergencies.
