Florida Landscaper Accused of Murdering Mother of Child
A shocking case has emerged in Florida, where a landscaper has been accused of murdering the mother of his young child. Saul Garcia Gonzalez, a Mexican native aged 40, allegedly shot Nerida Martel, 37, in the head and then disposed of her body in a Miami canal last month. The details of this horrific crime were revealed in a police report obtained by WPLG.
According to the report, after realizing that Martel’s friends and family would be concerned about her disappearance, Gonzalez concocted a false story. He told them that he believed she was possibly in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to divert attention from his heinous act.
However, when Martel’s name did not appear in any custody records, Gonzalez’s facade crumbled. Eventually, he reported her missing on October 9, three days after claiming to have last seen her dropping off their 2-year-old daughter at daycare. Just two days after filing the missing person report, Martel’s lifeless body was discovered in a canal near their residence, with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Investigations revealed inconsistencies in Gonzalez’s account of events. It was disclosed that Martel had reached out to a friend seeking a place to stay for herself and her daughter, indicating possible trouble in her relationship with Gonzalez. Family members also attested to Gonzalez’s verbally abusive behavior towards the victim.
Further incriminating evidence was found in phone records that placed Gonzalez at the canal around the time of Martel’s disappearance. Subsequently, Gonzalez was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He is currently being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
The motive behind Gonzalez’s attempt to mislead authorities by suggesting Martel was picked up by ICE remains unclear. It is yet to be determined if Martel was in the US illegally. This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the lengths some individuals will go to cover up their crimes.
