A Florida businessman who was previously charged with kidnapping his estranged wife in Spain is now facing new charges in the U.S. for her murder.

David Knezevich has been indicted by a federal grand jury in South Florida with charges including kidnapping resulting in death, foreign domestic violence resulting in death, and foreign murder of a U.S. national.

If convicted, he could potentially face the death penalty.

Last year, Knezevich pleaded not guilty to the kidnapping of his wife, Ana Hedao Knezevich, who went missing under suspicious circumstances.

The 36-year-old businessman is currently being held without bond.

His lead attorney, Jayne Weintraub, has stated that Knezevich plans to plead not guilty at his upcoming arraignment hearing.

A missing poster for Ana Maria Knezevich Henao is displayed on a streetlight in Madrid, Spain, in February.

Weintraub has criticized the government’s charges, calling them a “desperate attempt” and stating that there is no evidence linking Knezevich to his wife’s disappearance.

Ana Knezevich vanished from her Madrid apartment in February, and her body has not been found.

Prosecutors claim to have strong evidence linking Knezevich to the crime, including security footage placing him in Madrid around the time of the disappearance.

Further evidence includes Knezevich’s suspicious actions in renting a car in Serbia and his purchases of duct tape and spray paint matching those used in the crime.

The couple was going through a contentious divorce involving significant assets at the time of Ana’s disappearance.

Weintraub has disputed the government’s claims, stating that the divorce was amicable and financial matters were being resolved peacefully.
