A Florida man found himself in a bizarre situation after stealing items from a convenience store and leading deputies on a car chase. Richard Christopher Smith, 39, grabbed several alcoholic beverages from the Spring Lake Market before fleeing in a vehicle when law enforcement arrived.
During the pursuit, Smith shockingly offered deputies a vodka spritzer from the stolen loot as he drove by, nonchalantly telling them he was just trying to offer a drink. The deputies were understandably taken aback by the unconventional gesture, with the sheriff’s office jokingly questioning if Smith expected them to accept the drink and let him go free.
The chase eventually came to an end in the parking lot of a business at the Sebring Regional Airport, where Smith attempted to ram two patrol vehicles despite having all four tires flattened by spike strips. Unfazed by the chaos he caused, Smith tried to casually walk away from the scene while smoking a cigarette, asking the deputies if they had fun during the pursuit.
However, Smith’s escape was short-lived as he was swiftly Tased by an officer and taken into custody. He now faces a laundry list of charges, including two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, DUI, refusal to submit to a DUI test, and petit theft. His bond has been set at $120,000.
Despite the outrageous nature of the incident, Smith’s brazen actions and casual demeanor throughout the ordeal have left authorities scratching their heads. It serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drinking and driving, as well as the unpredictable behavior that can arise during police pursuits.
