After almost two years of sabotage, authorities in Okeechobee County have finally apprehended the infamous “Nail Bandit.” John Allan Starnes, a 72-year-old man from Florida, was caught in the act of damaging fire rescue vehicles by placing sharp objects under their tires. This arrest comes after a lengthy investigation known as “Operation Nail Bandit,” conducted by the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Department.

Okeechobee County Sheriff Noel Stephen revealed that Starnes had been targeting the county’s fire department vehicles for over a year and a half, causing significant damage. Starnes confessed to at least six attacks since April, leading to his arrest.

According to Sheriff Stephen, Starnes held a grudge against the fire department and took matters into his own hands by committing acts of sabotage. This vendetta against the department stemmed from a previous fire incident on Starnes’ property three years ago, as reported by WPTV.

Earl Wooten, the fire chief of Okeechobee County, mentioned the precautions they had to take due to Starnes’ actions. They had to regularly inspect their vehicles for sharp objects and even assign personnel to check the vehicles every two hours.

Starnes used various sharp objects like nails, screws, and wire disks to carry out his attacks on the emergency vehicles. This reign of sabotage has forced first responders to remain vigilant and take extra precautions to ensure their safety.

Unfortunately, incidents of hostility towards first responders have been on the rise across the country. In a recent tragic event in Idaho, three firefighters were ambushed by a shooter who deliberately set a fire to lure them out. Tragically, two of the firefighters lost their lives in the attack, highlighting the dangers that first responders face in the line of duty.
