A shocking incident unfolded at the Wise Center in DeFuniak Springs, Florida, when a special education teacher, Tonya Gainey, was caught on surveillance video allegedly abusing a nonverbal 3-year-old student. Gainey was seen slamming down the child’s arm before callously throwing away his lunch, leaving the boy in tears as his classmates ate.

The heartbreaking footage showed the young student crying and in pain as a result of Gainey’s actions. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into the incident, with Sheriff Michael Adkinson condemning Gainey’s behavior as unacceptable and reflected in the charges against her.

The school authorities were alerted to the incident the following day, prompting an investigation by the Department of Children and Families. However, attempts to remove Gainey from the premises were met with resistance as she refused to leave campus upon learning she could no longer have contact with students during the probe. Eventually, Gainey had to be escorted off the school property by a school resource officer.

In a surprising turn of events, Gainey submitted her resignation via email amidst the chaos, leaving questions about what led to the alleged assault unanswered. School officials informed parents of Gainey’s current and former students about the incident, while a medical evaluation was conducted on the child victim, whose condition remains undisclosed.

Gainey was arrested on December 13 and charged with felony child abuse and trespassing. She was booked at the Walton County Jail and later released on a $5,000 bond. The swift action taken by law enforcement highlights the seriousness of the allegations against Gainey and the commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students under their care.
