An incident at Forest Lake Elementary School in Florida has shocked the community after a teacher was arrested for allegedly putting a 3-year-old autistic boy in a headlock during story time. The teacher, Vilma Otero, was seen by a classroom aide holding the child in a “chokehold” while she continued reading to the class. The disturbing scene was captured in a photo that shows Otero sitting on a stool with the boy underneath her legs.
The child, who was not identified in the report, was crying and trying to escape from Otero’s grip. His face had turned red from the distress, and he struggled to communicate with authorities due to his disability. Despite his difficulties, he managed to convey that he had “got in trouble at school” and that “she hurt me.” Deputies also noticed redness on the toddler’s neck during their investigation.
Otero, a teacher with 36 years of experience working with special needs children, denied the classroom aide’s description of the incident. She claimed that it was common practice to move a child to a different room to calm down but denied restraining the boy in the manner reported.
The teacher now faces a felony charge of child abuse as a result of the incident. The community and school officials are shocked and saddened by the allegations against Otero, who had a long history of working with children with special needs.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper training and supervision in educational settings, especially when working with vulnerable populations like children with disabilities. Forest Lake Elementary School is cooperating with authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all students in their care.
