Experience a burst of vibrant creativity this weekend as the North Otago Horticultural Society presents its annual summer flower show at the Scottish Hall in Oamaru.

Visitors can expect a delightful display featuring dahlias, roses, gladioli, pot plants, floral art, as well as a variety of vegetables, fruits, and a captivating photography exhibit.

Despite the challenging weather conditions this season, Society president Christine Schaffer reassures that the show will go on. “We’ve had an unusual transition from spring to autumn without much of a summer. However, we’re always surprised by the quality of entries, especially in the vegetable section,” she shared.

This event marks one of the three shows organized by the society each year – spring, summer, and autumn.

Reflecting on the absence of long-time society member Marion Partridge, who passed away earlier this year, Mrs. Schaffer expressed, “Marion was a true asset to the horticultural society with her incredible talent in floral art. She will be dearly missed.”

As an avid gardener and past winner of the rose and vegetable categories, Mrs. Schaffer humbly acknowledges the element of luck in showcasing her entries. “The condition of roses can be unpredictable, so it’s all about timing during the show,” she noted.

While this year’s show maintains its traditional sections, Mrs. Schaffer hinted at potential changes for future events. With the society’s show schedule refreshed every two years, a review will be conducted in the winter to explore new possibilities.

  • The summer show will be open on Saturday from 2pm to 4pm and Sunday from 10am to 4pm, with an admission fee of $4 (cash).
