Enhance your creative vision and personal artistic philosophy through the unique MFA and Certificate programs offered by the New York Studio School. Be sure to meet the priority application deadline of January 15, 2026.

Become part of a vibrant community of artists engaging in full-time education in drawing, painting, and sculpture at the New York Studio School (NYSS), established in 1964. The school focuses on artists learning from one another through extensive studio work and perceptual experience, emphasizing drawing as a primary means of articulating ideas and emotions. Students hone their unique visual styles and cultivate studio practices designed to last across their artistic journeys.
Master of Fine Arts (MFA)
The comprehensive 60-credit, two-year MFA curriculum is designed to inspire artists to unlock their imagination, acquire technical skills, and develop a serious commitment to art. Each semester kicks off with a two-week intensive Marathon, led by faculty and guest instructors, aimed at sparking fresh ideas and setting the tone for the semester. The first year emphasizes a variety of studio classes, while students concentrate on refining their individual artistic visions during the second year. The program includes an Evening Lecture Series, technical workshops, personalized faculty mentorship, group critiques, visits from artists, and guided art trips. A weekly Critical Studies seminar delves into artistic theory, culminating in a written thesis and an exhibition. The program is led by renowned artists and committed educators, fostering a hard-working environment rooted in ethical and philosophical exploration. Each cohort for the MFA program is limited to 15 candidates annually.
Certificate Program
The three-year NYSS Certificate Program offers artists the chance to deepen their practice, available for participation in-person or virtually from anywhere globally. Similar to the MFA, each semester begins with the two-week Marathon, followed by 12 weeks of coursework and personal studio practice, enhanced by the Evening Lecture Series, weekly seminars, professional practice workshops, personalized faculty mentorship, group critiques, exhibition chances, and artist visits. Students can join at the start of either the fall or spring semester, with the option to study in-person or virtually for each semester. The program culminates in a Certificate Completion Exhibition after three years. This flexibility allows artists worldwide to grow technically and conceptually in their own studio environments.
Early applications are encouraged with a reduced fee of $50 ahead of the priority deadlines: October 15, 2025, for the Spring 2026 Certificate and January 15, 2026, for the Fall 2026 MFA and Certificate programs. After these deadlines, the application fee rises to $70.
