Faiz Shakir, the former campaign manager for Bernie Sanders during the 2020 presidential race, has thrown his hat into the ring for the position of chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). This move adds a new contender to the relatively quiet race for the leadership role within the party.

Confirming his candidacy in a message to POLITICO, Shakir’s decision was first reported by the New York Times. His entry into the race at this stage could potentially shake up a contest that has been predominantly focused on party operations rather than ideological visions. In a letter addressed to DNC members, Shakir expressed his frustration with the lack of direction and conviction in restoring the damaged Democratic brand, which ultimately prompted him to join the race.

Highlighting the importance of winning back America’s diverse working class, Shakir emphasized the need for fresh and substantive approaches to attract their support. He critiqued the conventional thinking within the party and called for a more innovative and progressive strategy to engage working-class voters effectively.

Despite entering the race after prominent figures like Ben Wikler and Ken Martin, who have already secured notable endorsements and backing from DNC members, Shakir faces an uphill battle in gaining traction for his campaign. Former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley has also garnered support among DNC members, further complicating Shakir’s path to victory.

While Shakir missed the opportunity to participate in the second DNC chair candidate forum in Michigan, his platform for the bid includes transforming the DNC into a robust organizing force with its own media outlet. He envisions the DNC releasing compelling original content to engage audiences and differentiate the party from its competitors.

As the race for DNC chair heats up with additional forums scheduled in January, Shakir’s late entry injects a new perspective and sets the stage for a more dynamic and competitive leadership contest within the Democratic Party. His vision for a revitalized and forward-thinking DNC could potentially reshape the party’s trajectory and outreach strategies in the upcoming election cycles.
