Jake Altman, a former organizer for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), shared insights into the organization during a recent interview with the Free Press. He discussed the internal dynamics for members involved in the movement.

Altman claims that the DSA is intolerant of dissent, aiming to eliminate those who criticize it. Members must align with the organization’s agenda to maintain good standing.

This description has been likened to the traits of a cult.

Transcript via Real Clear Politics:

Jake Altman, who previously organized for the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), states that in the last decade, the DSA has shifted from a pragmatic working-class social-democratic group to a more radical movement. This shift is driven by younger activists embracing extreme ideas.

He elaborates on the internal pressure faced by dissenters, the growing acceptance of communism, and a demographic change toward younger, more affluent, less experienced, and more radical members, as discussed during his Free Press interview.

Recounting his experiences, Altman said, “When I joined in 2013, the group was more social democratic. It was predominantly older and white. By 2015 in Boston, it was mainly a group of older men and me forming the core of the old DSA chapter. The difference between DSA back then and now is stark. It evolved from a moderate social-political group into a cultural powerhouse.”

“In 2014, the Left Caucus emerged, advocating extreme views,” he continued. “There were debates about the extent of Leninism to be incorporated into DSA. Dissenting voices and anti-communist sentiments were eroded. Being anti-communist became taboo, perceived as a significant evil.”

Altman explained, “You can’t hold anti-communist views without driving out older members who lived through the 20th century. This seemed calculated to eliminate internal resistance. Efforts were made to silence dissenters.”

Sharing his personal experience, Altman said, “Dissent leads to efforts to silence you. They employ mob tactics. If you speak out, they will coordinate attacks; many will denounce, smear, and discredit you for opposing them.”
