Riches, a devoted smoke eater, leaves behind a legacy of service and sacrifice. Despite the tragedy of losing his son on 9/11, he continued to search for victims at Ground Zero, finding closure only when he located his son’s body in 2002.

Riches spent 30 years with the FDNY, retiring on Dec. 18, 2007.
