A shocking incident occurred earlier this year in Miami Beach, where a hit-and-run took place right in front of the police headquarters. Surveillance footage captured the moment when Esmat Ahmed Ibrahim Khedr, 63, was riding her electric bicycle towards an intersection near the Miami Beach Police Headquarters when a blue Ford Bronco struck her and sped off. Despite bystanders rushing to help Khedr, Miami Beach police officer Edward Cavalie, who was near the scene, failed to take action. He directed witnesses to file a report themselves and drove away, ignoring the victim lying unconscious on the ground.

A witness eventually informed other officers inside the headquarters about the incident and found Khedr unresponsive. Tragically, Khedr was pronounced dead after being taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Following an internal investigation, Cavalie was fired for his negligent behavior that went against the department’s standards. Chief Wayne Jones condemned Cavalie’s actions, stating that they do not reflect the dedication and professionalism of the Miami Beach Police Department.

The driver of the blue Ford Bronco was identified as Demarcus Cortez Harrington, who was allegedly seen shrugging his shoulders at the victim before fleeing the scene. Harrington was accompanied by an acquaintance driving a gray Ford Bronco, and both were returning the vehicles to Miami International Airport after renting them through a car rental app. Harrington’s acquaintance reported hearing the impact of the collision and witnessing the Bronco speeding away.

After a confrontation between Harrington and his acquaintance, Harrington abandoned the Bronco in a nearby alleyway and was later apprehended by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. He has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash causing death and is currently detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami. Harrington’s criminal history in Iowa has also been revealed through records obtained by local authorities.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on October 2 to face the charges brought against him. The tragic hit-and-run incident has raised concerns about the actions of law enforcement officers and the accountability of individuals involved in such crimes. The Miami Beach community mourns the loss of Esmat Ahmed Ibrahim Khedr and seeks justice for her untimely death.
