Francisco Cancino: A Pioneer in Mexican Fashion
Francisco Cancino has solidified his position as a key figure in contemporary Mexican fashion in just over six years. His journey began as the creative director at Yakampot, where he honed his skills for a decade before launching his eponymous label. The success of his brand can be attributed to his consistency and dedication to presenting collections in line with the traditional seasonal calendar, a challenge in a country where the fashion industry is still evolving.
In recent years, Cancino has adopted a unique approach to his collections by creating them in tetralogies. This innovative structure allows him to develop his work at a more deliberate pace, catering to the fast-paced nature of modern lifestyles. Following his exploration of Mexico City’s history in his previous collections, Cancino embarked on a new chapter titled “CĂłmo Criar Monstruos Marinos” (“How to Raise Sea Monsters”), a theme that will unfold over the next three seasons.
This new phase sees Cancino infusing philosophical concepts into his creative process. The sea creatures featured in his collection serve as a Nietzschean metaphor, symbolizing the beginning of an exploration that encompasses materials, silhouettes, and patterns. The phrase “hacerse a la mar” (“to set out to sea”), borrowed from Nietzsche, serves as a reminder for Cancino to seek new horizons and embrace the unknown.
The collection showcased a blend of signature silhouettes with daring details, showcasing Cancino’s eagerness for experimentation. Pleated, cropped sleeves and fan-shaped high collars added cohesion to the garments, while cascading crystal fringes added a touch of sophistication. Silk, wool, and cotton fabrics with lustrous satin finishes created a luxurious aesthetic. The show concluded with sheer dresses, a departure from Cancino’s usual style, symbolizing a willingness to explore new territories.
In a backstage interview, Cancino expressed his desire to explore ideas freely, a theme that will evolve over his next three collections. He aimed to create paradoxes within his design language, moving between transparency and solidity, rigidity and languor, baroque and minimalistic styles. Inspired by Nietzsche’s concept of amor fati, Cancino views mistakes as opportunities for innovation and growth.
Francisco Cancino’s visionary approach to Mexican fashion has set him apart as a trailblazer in the industry. With his unique creative process and philosophical influences, Cancino continues to push boundaries and redefine contemporary Mexican fashion.
