Shakespearean sonnets, commonly known as English sonnets, present a unique writing style that can challenge students. However, they are also akin to a puzzle; once you understand how the pieces interconnect, the final creation is immensely gratifying! To assist in this journey, we offer a free sonnet template bundle that includes reference pages and a comprehensive how-to guide, guiding students through the process of selecting a theme, adhering to the correct rhyme scheme and meter, and much more.

Here’s what you’ll find in our bundle. You can utilize the pages individually or combine them for a complete sonnet writing unit.
How To Use the Sonnet Printables With Your Students
Each of these worksheets can be used independently or collectively in a comprehensive lesson or unit. Ideally, you would dedicate several days or up to a week to English sonnets—beginning with analysis of works by Shakespeare, Spenser, and others, and transitioning to students composing their own. Here are some engaging activities to try using our sonnet template worksheets.
Vocab Mingle
Teaching terms such as quatrain, volta, and iambic pentameter is essential for helping students construct their own sonnets. To make it more engaging, cut apart our completed “Sonnets: Important Terms” page to create word cards and definition cards. Distribute one card to each student, then have them mix and mingle until they locate their matching pair.
Sonnet Jigsaw
Students can use colored pencils or highlighters to color the puzzle pieces on the second page of our set. They can then apply those same colors to annotate Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18, discussing the various elements as you progress.
Sonnets and Songs
As students complete the chart on the “Theme and Format” worksheet, comparing traditional sonnet themes to contemporary situations, encourage them to identify a modern song that aligns with the theme. For instance, for unrequited love, they might select Taylor Swift’s “You Belong With Me.”
Rhyming Beads on a String
Our sonnet rhyme scheme worksheet likens a sonnet’s rhyme scheme to beads on a string. Provide students with real beads to work with, assigning each to the rhyming words in their sonnets as they compose. They can string the bead “words” as they write, ensuring they adhere to their rhyme pattern. This approach is fantastic for visual and tactile learners!
Sonnet Gallery Walk
Once your students have finalized their sonnets, display them along a school hallway and invite other students or even families to come check them out. Encourage the authors to stand next to their compositions so they can answer questions or share insights with visitors.
