The Government is set to distribute vaping starter kits to stop-smoking services nationwide starting next week in a bid to assist adults in their journey to quit smoking.

Increasing the availability of vaping starter kits is part of the Government’s strategy to make a final push towards achieving its Smokefree 2025 target.

According to Associate Health Minister Casey Costello, individuals enrolled in stop-smoking programs will receive a vape device along with a month’s supply of nicotine pods every month for three months, accompanied by ongoing support from the service.

Costello emphasized that these kits will be provided free of charge to adult smokers, acknowledging the increased motivation to quit smoking during the holiday season.

She highlighted the significant role that vaping has played in reducing smoking rates, noting that the Government is in favor of adults transitioning to vaping due to its lower health risks compared to traditional cigarettes.

Costello stressed the effectiveness of quit-smoking services, citing that individuals utilizing these services are four times more likely to successfully quit smoking than those who do not seek support.

With the aim of driving down the smoking rate to below 5 percent by the end of next year, Costello emphasized the importance of revitalizing smoking cessation efforts and targeting the appropriate demographic groups.

To support this initiative, a new ‘That’s Us, Smokefree 2025’ marketing campaign has been developed by Hāpai te Hauora, focusing on engaging key audiences through social media and local networks.

Costello also underscored the importance of ensuring access to a variety of effective smoking cessation products and tools, hinting at the potential introduction of new devices to providers in the near future.

The overarching message for 2025 is to encourage individuals to take the step towards quitting smoking, highlighting the success stories of countless others and the availability of dedicated support systems.

By fostering collaboration within the healthcare sector and promoting referrals to stop-smoking services, the Government aims to create a supportive environment for individuals looking to embark on their smoke-free journey.

With these initiatives in place, the Government is optimistic about making significant strides towards achieving the Smokefree 2025 goals and ultimately creating a healthier, smoke-free New Zealand.
