The shocking case of a French woman allegedly drugged by her husband and raped by more than 70 strangers while unconscious has left the victim, Gisele Pelicot, 72, with a harrowing tale of abuse and betrayal. Testifying in the southern French city of Avignon, Gisele revealed the extent of the trauma she endured at the hands of her husband, Dominique Pelicot, now 71, over nearly a decade.

Gisele recounted the horror of discovering that her husband had orchestrated a scheme where scores of men were invited to their home to rape her close to 100 times between 2011 and 2020. She revealed that she was left with several sexually transmitted infections, including being abused at least six times by a man known to have HIV. Despite the risks to her health and life, the abuse continued unabated.

The grandmother shared that she was so heavily sedated with sleeping pills that she was unaware of the assaults taking place. Pelicot and 50 other men are currently on trial for their alleged involvement in the rape-ring plot, with prosecutors claiming that Gisele was raped at least 92 times by 72 different men. The sickening details of the case have shocked the nation and drawn attention to the issue of sexual violence and exploitation.

Gisele described the rules enforced by her husband to ensure she remained unconscious during the attacks, including banning cologne and smoking. She expressed her feelings of being “sacrificed on the altar of vice” and dehumanized by the perpetrators. The case came to light in 2020 after Pelicot was caught filming up women’s skirts in a shopping center, leading to the discovery of thousands of photos and videos of Gisele being raped at home.

After 50 years of marriage, Gisele left her husband upon seeing the evidence of the abuse. She described feeling shattered and unsure of her identity, stating that rebuilding herself may be a daunting task. Despite the trauma, Gisele hopes that her testimony will spare other women from enduring similar ordeals. The trial is ongoing, with Gisele’s courage in coming forward shedding light on the dark reality of sexual violence and exploitation.
