Amazon’s Q1 2026 earnings report has once again demonstrated the company’s remarkable growth and diversification. CEO Andy Jassy highlighted several key milestones, including Amazon’s impressive delivery speed and entertainment achievements. However, it was AWS (Amazon Web Services) that stole the spotlight, with a 28% growth to $37.59 billion in revenue, solidifying its position as the core of Amazon’s investment thesis.

One of the standout points from the earnings report was AWS’s impressive performance, posting its fastest growth in 15 quarters with a 38% operating margin. This growth was fueled by significant commitments from major players in the AI industry, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, totaling approximately 7 GW combined.

Despite Amazon’s expansion into various sectors such as satellite operations, entertainment, healthcare, and more, the stock thesis still revolves around AWS and its dominance in the cloud computing market. With total Q1 revenue reaching $181.52 billion and EPS surpassing expectations at $2.78, Amazon continues to demonstrate its ability to deliver strong financial results.

However, the cost of Amazon’s ambitious expansion strategy is not to be overlooked. The company’s Q1 capex reached $44.2 billion, and its long-term debt has climbed to $119.1 billion, signaling the massive investment required to maintain AWS’s leadership position. Despite these financial commitments, Amazon’s stock price has seen a significant increase, trading near $258.81 after a 31% one-month surge.

Looking ahead, investors are eagerly awaiting Amazon’s Q2 guidance, which is expected to range from $194 billion to $199 billion. Analysts will be closely monitoring any commentary on tariffs and the potential impact of a recession on Amazon’s future performance.

In conclusion, Amazon’s Q1 2026 earnings report reaffirms the company’s position as a global powerhouse with a diverse portfolio of businesses. While the company continues to expand into new areas, it is clear that AWS remains the key driver of Amazon’s success and investor interest. As Amazon continues to navigate the challenges of a rapidly evolving market, its ability to innovate and adapt will be crucial in maintaining its position as a leader in the tech industry.
