As I settled back into life in New York City, I found myself reconnecting with Jackie over lunches at the famed ‘21’ restaurant. It was comforting to see that the waiters still remembered her favorite dish, fish Florentine, and her penchant for pistachio ice cream for dessert. Our conversations were more relaxed now that my novel was set to be released in July. Jackie spoke fondly of her children, Caroline and John, expressing her belief in the importance of motherhood.

It became evident during our discussions that Jackie placed a high value on the role of a mother, finding it to be the most creative and joyful aspect of her life. While she acknowledged that she had not been solely devoted to homemaking, she emphasized the significance of parental stewardship. In her eyes, nothing else truly mattered if one failed in raising their children properly.

As a single mother myself, navigating the challenges of balancing my daughter’s needs with my own, I found Jackie’s insights on motherhood and relationships to be invaluable. Her advice resonated with me, serving as a constant reminder of the weight of responsibility that comes with parenting.

After my novel was released, I found myself wandering through Madison Avenue feeling somewhat adrift. Despite the positive reviews, I couldn’t shake the feeling that my book had fallen short of its potential. It was during this aimless stroll that I stumbled upon a bookstore showcasing copies of my novel in the window. To my surprise, I discovered that Jackie had personally edited my book and left a note for the manager, praising it as a “fine first novel.”

While I was grateful for the exposure that Jackie’s endorsement brought, I couldn’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment that my work was being celebrated primarily due to her celebrity status. Nevertheless, I accepted the manager’s thanks and left the store, reflecting on the fleeting nature of fame and recognition.

As I made my way back to Brooklyn on the subway, I couldn’t help but think of Jackie and her unwavering grace in the face of privilege and tragedy. Her ability to remain unjaded and enthusiastic despite life’s challenges served as a beacon of inspiration for me. I aspired to embody her sense of imperiousness and grace, striving to approach life with a similar level of poise and optimism. Jackie had been a guiding light in my journey as a writer and a mother, and I was determined to carry forward her legacy of resilience and elegance.
