In a bizarre turn of events, a Canterbury man was recently arrested for a rather unusual crime – stealing front gates and attaching them to his own fence. The stolen gates were discovered “partially attached” to his property, leading to his arrest.
According to Waimakariri/Hurunui police response manager, Senior Sergeant Stephen McDaniel, the theft occurred on Southbrook Rd during peak traffic hours. Thanks to CCTV footage and diligent police work, the alleged offender was identified and apprehended.
The 41-year-old man appeared in court and was remanded in custody, with a scheduled court date for June 25. Additionally, the Canterbury Rural Tactical Crime Unit executed a search warrant at a Swannanoa address and recovered three stolen vehicles. A 30-year-old woman was also taken into custody in connection with the stolen vehicles.
McDaniel expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation and urged them to report any suspicious activities to the police. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in solving crimes and maintaining public safety.
