To accommodate the influx of visitors, the city council is planning to create an “entertainment hub” in the Octagon on the day of the match. This hub will be open from noon to 7pm and will feature live music, food trucks, and other activities to enhance the visitor experience.
The council is also looking into improving transport options for the event, such as park-and-ride services, Octagon shuttles, and train rides between Dunedin and Mosgiel.
One of the key features of the proposed entertainment hub is a fenced-in area in the lower Octagon with a marquee that can accommodate up to 350 people. Security staff will be on site to ensure safety and manage behavior.
The council is considering relaxing the liquor ban in the Octagon for the duration of the event, with the selected supplier obtaining a special license to sell alcohol on the premises. This will allow visitors to enjoy a drink while taking in the festivities.
Local businesses, such as Vault 21, are supportive of the council’s plans and are looking forward to the positive impact it will have on the Octagon. With the city gearing up for a vibrant weekend of rugby and entertainment, residents and visitors alike can expect a memorable experience in Dunedin.
