Tong admitted that his family had concerns about his health, especially after suffering a heart attack several years ago. However, he emphasized that he had learned to prioritize his well-being and his loved ones. While he acknowledged not keeping up with the current council closely, Tong mentioned that his main focus would be on water reforms and reviewing council policies. He also expressed his intention to prioritize family and friends over work commitments, a lesson he had learned from his previous years as mayor.
This is not the first time Tong has reversed his decision on mayoral plans, as he had previously stated that his third term would be his last. In a similar fashion, he had initially announced his candidacy for the Invercargill mayoralty in 2021 before withdrawing and ultimately losing in the Southland race to Scott.
Meanwhile, former Gore mayor Tracy Hicks, who also narrowly lost in the previous election, has hinted at the possibility of running again. Hicks mentioned that he is currently reflecting on his decision and discussing with others, with a final choice expected soon.
