California Governor Gavin Newsom recently criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and referred to Israel as an “apartheid” state during a book event promoting his memoir. Newsom expressed concerns about Netanyahu’s domestic issues and hardline supporters who advocate for annexing the West Bank. He also mentioned Thomas Friedman’s description of Israel as an apartheid state.
While Newsom previously expressed admiration for Israel, he took a more leftist stance against the country amidst ongoing collaborations with Netanyahu on Iran-related matters. Newsom hesitated when asked about reconsidering military support for Israel, acknowledging the complexity of the situation.
The Governor also mocked Israel’s attempts at regime change in Iran and highlighted the challenges they face internally. Newsom’s evolving views on Israel may influence his political aspirations, especially as stances on Israel and Palestine played a significant role in the 2024 presidential election.
Other political figures, like former Vice President Kamala Harris, have also faced scrutiny over their positions on Israel-Palestine relations. Harris previously suggested that people should reflect on whether Israel committed genocide in Gaza. Newsom’s comments add to the ongoing debate surrounding US-Israel relations.
