In the world of fashion, there is a shift happening among the younger generations. Abigale Masters, a 25-year-old content creator from London, is at the forefront of this movement. Despite owning a 2019 Issey Miyake winter coat that she has never worn, Masters is known for her vibrant and eclectic wardrobe, often showcasing bold designs from designers like Ashley Williams, Chopova Lowena, and Loewe on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

Masters recently acquired a vintage fuschia dress from the Prada Fall/Winter 2018 collection to complement her hot pink hair. This choice reflects a departure from the traditional fashion norms, as she embraces highly saturated colors and haphazardly matched ensembles. This trend is not limited to Masters alone; it is part of a larger cultural shift led by Gen Z and, potentially, Gen Alpha.

The preference for bold colors and unconventional pairings is evident in both high street and luxury fashion. According to retail intelligence firm EDITED, there has been a decrease in black knitwear arrivals at popular retailers like Zara, H&M, Mango, Pull&Bear, and Bershka. Instead, brands are focusing on vibrant hues like red and pink, catering to the evolving tastes of younger consumers.

Luxury designers are also embracing this shift towards color. Krista Corrigan, senior retail analyst at EDITED, predicts an influx of brighter colors in 2026, with designers incorporating vibrant shades like cherry reds, hot pinks, rich purples, and chartreuse greens into their collections. This move towards color clashing can be seen in recent runway shows from brands like Valentino, Miu Miu, and Prada.

Retail consultant Robert Burke attributes this change to the influence of social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, which have empowered Gen Z to embrace individuality and reject traditional fashion norms. This newfound sense of freedom and independence is reflected in their clothing choices, as they eschew trends in favor of personal style.

As we look ahead, it seems that the future of fashion will be characterized by a bold and adventurous spirit, with Gen Z and Gen Alpha leading the way in redefining sartorial standards. Whether it’s through vibrant colors, unexpected combinations, or a rejection of traditional rules, the next generation of fashion enthusiasts is poised to make a lasting impact on the industry.
