George Lopez recently announced that he will be retiring from stand-up comedy after his upcoming hour-long special on Amazon’s Prime Video platform. In an interview with talk show host Tamron Hall, Lopez shared that this special would be his last, jokingly saying, “I’ve subjected the American people to enough of my crap.”
When asked about his decision to retire, Lopez mentioned that it “seems like the right time” to leave stand-up comedy behind. He expressed his desire to spend more time with his daughter Mayan Lopez, who is his co-star on the NBC sitcom “Lopez vs Lopez.”
Reflecting on his career, Lopez acknowledged that stand-up comedy has been a significant part of his life but felt that it was time to move on. He previously addressed retirement rumors in 2021 and hinted that his Netflix special, “We’ll Do It For Half,” could be his last.
As he approaches his 60th birthday, Lopez shared with Time magazine that he sees his career coming to a close. He mentioned missing out on sunsets and years of traveling, emphasizing the passage of time and how he feels like an “old George Lopez.”
Lopez’s upcoming Prime Video special, part of his “ALLLRIIIIGHHTTT! Comedy” tour, was filmed at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theater. The news of his retirement coincides with the premiere of the third season of “Lopez vs Lopez,” scheduled to air on NBC on Oct. 18.
