French actor Gérard Depardieu is set to stand trial in a criminal court in Paris on Monday for the alleged sexual assaults of two women on a film set in 2021. The accusations against Depardieu include using violence, coercion, surprise, or threat during the assaults that took place on the set of “Les Volets verts” (The Green Shutters). The trial comes at a time when France is grappling with sexual violence issues, especially in the cinema industry, following the #MeToo movement.
One of the victims, a 53-year-old production designer, reported that Depardieu trapped her between his legs and groped her buttocks, genitals, chest, and breasts over her clothes. Witnesses on the film set confirmed the incident, stating that the woman was visibly shocked and had to break free from Depardieu’s grip. The victim suffered psychological distress following the assault, including anxiety attacks, sleep disturbances, and weight loss.
Another woman on the film set had also complained about Depardieu’s inappropriate behavior, alleging that he had touched her buttocks on multiple occasions and responded with insults when she objected. Despite the allegations, Depardieu’s lawyer maintains that he is the target of false accusations and will present evidence to refute the claims.
French President Emmanuel Macron and some members of the film industry have expressed support for Depardieu, emphasizing the importance of separating his art from the allegations against him. However, a documentary released last year highlighted accusations of sexual misconduct by 16 women against Depardieu, further complicating the situation.
Depardieu has been charged with rape and sexual assault in the past, with authorities reviving a 2018 investigation following new allegations from actor Charlotte Arnould. The actor has consistently denied any wrongdoing, stating that he has never abused a woman. Despite his legal troubles, Depardieu remains a prominent figure in French cinema and has enjoyed international fame with roles in Hollywood.
The trial of Depardieu comes amidst a broader conversation in France about sexual violence and abuse in the film industry. Recent allegations and trials involving prominent figures have sparked protests and calls for accountability within the industry. The ongoing trial of 50 men accused of raping a woman who was drugged and rendered unconscious by her husband has particularly resonated with the public, leading to widespread demonstrations in support of the victim and calls for justice in cases of sexual violence. Feminist groups are planning protests outside the courthouse ahead of Depardieu’s hearings on Monday.
