Ghislaine Maxwell Requests Immunity for Testimony Before House Oversight Committee
In a surprising turn of events, Ghislaine Maxwell has expressed her willingness to testify before the House Oversight Committee on August 11, but with one condition – immunity from further prosecution. Maxwell’s legal team sent a letter to the committee’s chair, James Comer, on July 29, outlining their terms for cooperation.
Maxwell is open to answering questions, but only if a “fair and safe path forward can be established.” She has requested that the Committee provide the questions in advance, arguing that surprise questioning would be counterproductive. Additionally, Maxwell has asked that the questioning be postponed until after the resolution of her Supreme Court petition and forthcoming habeas petition.
If her demands are not met, Maxwell’s legal team has warned that she will invoke her Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination. However, Congress has made it clear that they will not grant her immunity for her testimony.
A spokeswoman for the Oversight Committee responded to Maxwell’s demands, stating that they will not consider granting congressional immunity for her testimony. It remains to be seen how Maxwell will proceed in light of this refusal.
