A ‘Ghost’ Island in the Caspian Sea Disappears Once Again

In early 2023, a mysterious ‘ghost’ island appeared in the Caspian Sea, only to vanish shortly after. Scientists have been closely monitoring this phenomenon, which has been occurring for centuries, with the island reemerging and disappearing in a cyclical fashion.

Recent images from NASA satellites capture the island’s fleeting presence, from its sudden emergence between January and February of 2023 to its gradual disappearance by the end of 2024.

The island is situated at the tip of the Kumani bank mud volcano, located underwater off the coast of Azerbaijan. When the volcano erupts, a temporary land mass made of mud emerges about 20 kilometers from the mainland.

Historical records show that the island has appeared and disappeared numerous times since its first documentation in May 1861. It rarely remains above water for more than two years before submerging once again.

Unlike previous fiery eruptions associated with mud volcanoes, the ghost island’s appearance in 2023 was relatively quiet. Geophysicist Mark Tingay noted the island’s sudden emergence in satellite images but found no official reports or mentions of it in news or social media.

Despite advancements in technology and connectivity, the ghost island’s appearances continue to surprise scientists. Mark Tingay recalled a similar event in 1993 when the island reappeared without any significant volcanic activity, yet went unnoticed by official reports.

As the ‘ghost’ island disappears once again, leaving researchers intrigued by its mysterious cyclical nature, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing geological wonders that unfold beneath the waters of the Caspian Sea.
