Season 4, Episode 13 of CBS’s “Ghosts” titled “Ghostfellas” took viewers on a thrilling ride filled with 1980s flashbacks, a Mafioso storyline, ghostly mind games, and a heist. The episode marked Rose McIver’s directorial debut on television, bringing a unique twist and genre bend to the series. McIver, who stars in the show as Samantha, expressed her excitement about exploring different flavors and playing with tropes in this episode.
In “Ghostfellas,” Jay (played by Utkarsh Ambudkar) seeks to enhance his restaurant’s menu with a new arrabbiata sauce, which is provided by the ghost of Pete (Richie Moriarty) from the early 1980s. However, things take a dramatic turn when it is revealed that the recipe belongs to Jay’s ex-wife Carol’s (Caroline Aaron) family, who has ties to the mob. As the story unfolds, Pete discovers that the travel agency where he worked was a front for organized crime.
Meanwhile, in a sub-plot, Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky) and Trevor (Asher Grodman) attempt to manipulate the sleeping arrangements at Woodstone Manor, leading to a game of intimidation and suspicion among the ghosts. McIver highlighted the intriguing dynamics between the characters in this storyline.
Having prepared for years to step into the director’s chair, McIver shared her passion for the social aspect of directing and the challenges of managing a large crew on set. She chose to direct an episode set mostly at Woodstone Manor to leverage her familiarity with the surroundings and production processes. Despite her heavy involvement in the scenes, McIver felt confident in tackling the project.
The episode briefly ventured outside the manor for the 1980s scenes, which were filmed in a real Montreal travel agency. McIver praised the production team for finding a location that authentically captured the era, complete with nostalgic set pieces. She also commended Richie Moriarty’s performance as Pete, emphasizing his versatility and collaborative spirit on set.
As filming wrapped on Season 4, CBS announced the renewal of “Ghosts” for two more seasons. McIver teased a major season finale, promising an explosive ending that sets the stage for Season 5. With a star-studded cast and exciting developments in store, fans can expect a thrilling conclusion to the current season and a promising future for the beloved series.
