A generous act of kindness has brought warmth and wheels to those in need, thanks to the compassion of a woman touched by grief and inspired by a newspaper story.

After coming across an article in The Star highlighting the Dunedin Bedding Bank’s work, Kelley Gardner decided to donate $10,000 to the charity. Her donation was intended to help purchase a car to support the efforts of founder Janine Walker.

Reflecting on her time in the cold of Central Otago and memories of her late husband, Dr Mac Gardner, who passed away recently, Kelley felt compelled to give back. She fondly remembered her husband as an eccentric and charming man, whose quirkiness was part of his appeal.

The Gardners had a small cabin in Central Otago, where they would gather as a family regardless of the season. Despite the cabin being unheated and lacking electricity, Dr Gardner made sure everyone stayed warm with woolen blankets and hot water bottles.

When Kelley read about the Dunedin Bedding Bank in need of a vehicle, she knew she wanted to help. She generously donated enough money not only to provide blankets and bottles but also to purchase a car for the charity.

Still mourning the loss of her husband, Kelley saw this donation as a way to honor his memory by supporting those in need. She was impressed by Janine Walker’s humble and compassionate nature, admiring her dedication to helping others.

Kelley’s upbringing in America, where her family received food donations when they were struggling, instilled in her a strong sense of obligation to help those less fortunate. She felt compelled to give back now that she was in a position to do so.

The Dunedin Bedding Bank was overwhelmed by Kelley’s generous donation, which will not only allow them to buy a much-needed car but also cover essential expenses like maintenance and insurance. The charity is grateful for the community’s support, as every contribution, big or small, makes a difference in their ability to assist those in need.

As they contemplate the best vehicle options for the charity, the Dunedin Bedding Bank is thankful for the outpouring of support that will enable them to continue their vital work in the community.
