Giorgio Armani’s life and career will be explored in a premium TV series produced by Italy’s Lux Vide, in collaboration with the fashion house he founded, known for its strong Hollywood connections.

The yet-to-be-titled Armani biopic, designed for an international audience, has engaged Ferzan Ozpetek, a Turkish-born, Italy-based director celebrated for his artistic and commercial successes.

Ozpetek, who personally knew Armani, recently achieved global success with the 2025 hit “Diamonds.” The film, set in a 1970s Rome atelier, follows women racing to complete a demanding order for an Oscar-winning costume designer. “Diamonds” performed exceptionally well at the local box office and gained international attention. Ozpetek’s television credentials include Disney+’s first Italian original series in 2022, “The Ignorant Angels,” a romantic drama based on his popular film “Ignorant Fairies.”

“I knew, admired, and spent time with Giorgio for many years, both on official occasions and in more private settings,” Ozpetek said in a statement to Variety. “We talked about cinema, of which he was notably passionate and an expert, but also about art, costumes, architecture, and life itself. I saw in him both a visionary and a brilliant artist, as well as a down-to-earth and very determined man.”

Ozpetek added: “The opportunity to tell his story is both an exciting honor and a challenge that involves capturing the many facets of such a complex, original, and captivating personality.”

Ozpetek is co-writing the screenplay for the Armani series alongside Lux Vide’s head writer Francesco Arlanch, whose work includes the internationally popular series “Medici,” “Hotel Costiera,” and the medical drama “Doc.” Details of the storyline and series structure remain confidential.

Armani, a globally recognized fashion pioneer from Milan, was renowned for his relaxed yet detailed elegance. He revolutionized fashion with unlined men’s sports jackets and deconstructed suits, most notably worn by Richard Gere in the 1980 film “American Gigolo.” Armani also redefined the woman’s power suit and dressed numerous Hollywood stars, both male and female. Notable names include Julia Roberts, Diane Keaton, Jodie Foster, Cate Blanchett, Lupita Nyong’o, Anne Hathaway, and Michelle Yeoh, as well as male actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Russell Crowe, Robert De Niro, and Tom Cruise.

Armani’s connection to Hollywood earned him wardrobe credits in over 200 films.

A self-made man, Armani fully owned his $10 billion fashion empire at the time of his death on September 4, 2025, at the age of 91. He was often seen in dark trousers and his signature black T-shirt. Born in Piacenza, Italy, on July 11, 1934, Armani entered the fashion industry in 1957. He and his partner, Sergio Galeotti, sold their Volkswagen for $10,000 to launch their menswear label, expanding to include women’s lines the following year.

Armani was known for his privacy, rarely discussing personal details. He revealed to Vanity Fair that he had romantic relationships with both men and women and maintained a long-term relationship with Galeotti until his death in 1985 due to AIDS-related complications.

The Giorgio Armani fashion house will support the Fremantle TV series production, offering access to its archives, creations, and iconic locations. This will provide an unparalleled insight into the world and legacy of one of fashion’s most influential figures, according to Fremantle.

“For years, Lux has pursued the dream of telling Giorgio Armani’s story, an artist who created a unique and recognizable style,” stated Matilde Bernabei, Lux Vide’s founder and president. She described Armani as “a standard-bearer of Made in Italy who rewrote the rules of style and elegance.”

“It will be an ambitious series,” Bernabei added, “and we are proud that the market has immediately shown interest, confirming its international potential.”
