MINNEAPOLIS—In a story that seems to defy grim odds, a 12-year-old girl shot in the head during a tragic incident at a Minneapolis church is reportedly making what her family describes as “miraculous” progress.
Sophia Forchas, who sustained the most severe injuries among the children affected in the shooting at the Church of the Annunciation, is transitioning this week from acute care to an inpatient rehabilitation program, according to her family’s recent statement.
Despite the medical team’s cautious optimism, signs of neurological recovery have begun to emerge for Sophia, especially poignant given that mere weeks ago, medical professionals had doubts about her survival.
“Sophia displays extraordinary strength, courage, and an unwavering spirit on her path to recovery. We ask for your ongoing prayers as she navigates this challenging road. It is through divine will that she has persevered this far,” the family shared in a statement released Monday via Hennepin Healthcare, where she is receiving treatment.
This ordeal unfolded as Sophia and her classmates at Annunciation Catholic School were gathered for the first Mass of the academic year when an attacker opened fire through a window, resulting in the tragic loss of two students and injuries to 21 others. According to police reports, the shooter subsequently took his own life.
In an unsettling twist, Sophia’s mother, a nurse at Hennepin Healthcare, learned of her daughter’s injury only after arriving at work to assist other shooting victims.
Undergoing an emergency surgical procedure, Sophia’s neurosurgeon, Dr. Walt Galicich, revealed that a bullet had lodged in her brain, inflicting significant damage, including to a critical blood vessel. To alleviate the pressure in her skull, surgeons had to remove the left half of it.
“While she has a lengthy recovery ahead involving extensive rehabilitation, her remarkable resilience brings hope at every turn,” her family noted, reflecting a blend of heartbreak and hope.
