In 2017, controversy arose when Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, who co-ran the show, stood by writer Murray Miller in the face of a rape allegation by actress Aurora Perrineau.
Their response, which implied the accusation might be unfounded, triggered a strong backlash. This led to Dunham issuing a public apology, where she later stated: “Every woman who comes forward deserves to be heard, fully and completely, and our relationship with the accused should not be part of the calculation anyone makes when examining her case.”
The show also faced scrutiny over issues of privilege, with focus on the notable family backgrounds of several cast members. Notably, Allison Williams is the daughter of broadcaster Brian Williams, while Zosia Mamet’s parents are playwright David Mamet and actor Lindsay Crouse.
Dunham herself, whose parents are artists Carroll Dunham and Laurie Simmons, dismissed claims of nepotism, insisting her work is independent of her family connections.
In her memoir, Dunham discusses her working relationship with Adam Driver during the show’s filming, highlighting instances of personal tension and emotional depth.
She admitted: “At the time, I didn’t have the skill to… it never entered my mind to say, ‘I am your boss, you can’t speak to me this way.'”
