The General Motors software team has experienced a significant shakeup in recent weeks, with three top executives departing the company. Baris Cetinok, the senior vice president of software and services product management, is set to leave GM on December 12. This news comes shortly after the departures of Dave Richardson, senior vice president of software and services engineering, and Barak Turovsky, who served as head of AI at the automaker. All three executives brought extensive tech experience from companies like Apple and Google.

These leadership changes coincide with the appointment of Sterling Anderson as the new chief product officer at GM. Anderson, a veteran of the autonomous vehicle industry, now oversees various departments within the company, including vehicle and manufacturing engineering, battery technology, and software and services product management. His mandate is to streamline GM’s product development process and enhance the overall user experience.

The recent departures are part of a broader restructuring effort within GM aimed at breaking down organizational silos and fostering greater collaboration across different tech and engineering teams. The goal is to integrate hardware and software development, AI capabilities, and global product strategy into a unified organization. This shift is intended to optimize the development and deployment of software in GM’s vehicles, ensuring a more seamless and integrated approach.

As part of this restructuring, GM is also bringing in new talent to bolster its technology team. Cristian Mori, with experience at Symbiotic, Rivian, and Boston Dynamics, has joined GM to lead the robotics division. Additionally, Behrad Toghi, formerly of Apple, has been appointed as the AI lead, while Rashed Haq has been named vice president of autonomous vehicles. These strategic hires underscore GM’s commitment to advancing its technology capabilities and staying at the forefront of innovation in the automotive industry.

In light of these changes, GM is poised to position itself as a leading player in the tech-driven transformation of the automotive sector. The company’s focus on integrating software, AI, and robotics into its product development process reflects a broader industry trend towards digitalization and automation. With a new leadership team in place and a renewed emphasis on innovation, GM is well-positioned to drive the future of mobility and deliver cutting-edge solutions to its customers.
