Former Senator Robert Menendez, who was convicted on bribery and corruption charges, has received letters of support from various individuals including a convicted drug dealer, a former US diplomat, and a former New Jersey mayor ahead of his sentencing later this month.
Last week, Menendez’s legal team submitted a comprehensive document containing over 120 letters from his family, friends, and associates emphasizing his good character and dedication to public service over the years.
The three-term Democrat was found guilty of accepting bribes and corruption charges after a trial in July. He is set to be sentenced in Manhattan federal court on January 29.
Two of the businessmen involved in the case were also convicted alongside Menendez, while his wife, Nadine Arslanian, is facing corruption charges as well.
Despite the convictions, Menendez has maintained his innocence and plans to appeal the verdict.
Among those who wrote letters of support is Manuel Diaz, a former law partner of Menendez who was convicted of drug trafficking in the past. Diaz highlighted how Menendez helped him reintegrate into society after his release from prison.
Felix Roque, a former mayor of West New York who was indicted for corruption in 2015 but later found not guilty, also expressed his support for Menendez.
Mari Carmen Aponte, the US Ambassador to Panama, detailed Menendez’s support for her when she faced opposition during her nomination process due to unfounded allegations.
Menendez’s children, including MSNBC anchor Alicia Menendez and Democratic Congressman Robert Menendez, also wrote letters urging leniency for their father.
Menendez’s legal team is pushing for a sentence of up to 27 months, contrary to the 12 years recommended by the probation department.
Meanwhile, Menendez’s wife, Nadine, who is also facing charges, is slated to undergo her own trial in the coming month.
