The sad news follows Kirkland being placed on hospice at a Palm Springs hospital over the weekend. Her battle with dementia, compounded by injuries from a recent fall in the shower, had taken a toll on her health.
Born in New York City to Sally Kirkland Sr. and Fredric M. Kirkland, Sally honed her acting skills at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
She rose to fame as one of Andy Warhol‘s “13 Most Beautiful Women” in 1964 and made history as the first actress to appear fully nude on stage in the off-Broadway production “Sweet Eros” in 1968.
Decades later, Kirkland’s talent shone brightly as she won a Golden Globe for her lead role in the 1987 film “Anna,” a performance that also earned her an Academy Award nomination.
With over 200 acting credits to her name, Kirkland’s work extended to iconic projects like “Charlie’s Angels,” “JFK,” and “Bruce Almighty.”
Besides acting, Kirkland was an ordained minister and had a deep passion for yoga.
She generously shared her wisdom with countless aspiring actors, including luminaries like Barbra Streisand, Sandra Bullock, and Liza Minelli.
She is survived by her godson and filmmaker Coty Galloway (Baily), three cousins Brookie, Katherine, and Tina Kirkland, along with several close friends.
Sally Kirkland was 84 years old.
Rest in Peace.
