The family of the victim in the Bryan Kohberger quadruple murder case is demanding full transparency from the court, following the lifting of a gag order by Judge Steven Hippler. The family insists that simply allowing prosecutors to speak to the media is not enough, and they are calling for all case documents to be unsealed immediately.
The gag order, which was put in place to ensure an unbiased jury pool, has been criticized by Steve Goncalves, the father of victim Kaylee. Goncalves believes that the order was used to cover up prosecutors’ mistakes in the case, leading to a controversial plea deal that took the death penalty off the table in exchange for life in prison without the possibility of parole or appeal.
Goncalves and other family members of the victims feel that they have been kept in the dark about crucial details of the case, and were reassured to trust the prosecutors and be patient for all information to come out at trial. However, with the recent guilty plea entered by Kohberger on July 2, major evidence of the case was only revealed then, causing further frustration for the families.
With Kohberger’s sentencing scheduled for July 23, the clock is ticking for Judge Hippler to reconsider his decision and release all case documents as requested by the victims’ families. The outcome of this case will not only bring closure to the families of the victims but also shed light on the flaws in the criminal justice system that have been exposed throughout this process.
