Elon Musk is actively working to abolish ‘ranked choice’ voting in Alaska by making a significant financial contribution.

This voting method, criticized for allegedly benefiting left-leaning candidates, is also said to have influenced the Los Angeles mayoral race by sidelining Spencer Pratt. Musk’s involvement aligns with his interests.

According to The Anchorage Daily News:

Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, has donated $1.5 million to support the campaign to repeal Alaska’s voting system, as reported in a state filing on Friday.

Appearing on the November ballot, Ballot Measure 2 aims to eliminate Alaska’s ranked choice voting, open primaries, and campaign finance laws, which were introduced by a 2020 ballot measure.

Last month, Musk contributed $1.5 million to the Aurora Action Network, a political action committee based in Wisconsin. This group, which has received donations from several billionaire donors like Dick Uihlein, Jeff Yass, Timothy Mellon, and Jeffery Hildebrand of Hilcorp, passed on $1 million to the repeal campaign in late July.

Musk’s financial input represents a notable portion of the repeal campaign’s funding and could significantly impact the future of Alaska’s electoral process.

If successful, the ballot measure would revert Alaska to closed partisan primaries and single-choice general elections, also removing campaign finance laws that require disclosure of major donors like Musk.

Meanwhile, a group opposing the repeal, which supports the existing voting system, maintains a financial edge, having raised over $5 million, largely from out-of-state megadonors.

Ranked choice voting is considered instrumental in maintaining Lisa Murkowski’s political position.

Eliminating ranked choice voting could be beneficial for both Alaska and the nation.
