A heroic bystander was injured when he attempted to intervene in a robbery targeting a woman’s cell phone near Columbus Circle over the weekend, according to police reports.
At approximately 12:50 a.m. on Saturday, a thief, dressed in all black, snatched the phone from a 35-year-old woman on West 58th Street between Ninth Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen.
Seeing the crime unfold, the 39-year-old Good Samaritan rushed to help and tried to wrest the phone from the robber’s grip, but was unsuccessful, police stated.
The assailant then turned on the bystander, stabbing him in the stomach with a weapon described by authorities as an “unknown object.”
The man who was injured was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he is currently listed in stable condition.
In the meantime, the victim of the phone theft is reportedly “a bit traumatized by the entire incident,” according to her mother, who spoke to The Post on Monday and described the situation as “just unbelievable.”
“She’s doing alright, but the man who tried to assist her and was injured is still recovering in the hospital,” her mother mentioned. “He underwent surgery.”
“I know that her phone was taken,” added the victim’s mother, “but someone stepped in to help her.”
The suspect, who escaped the scene on foot, remained at large as of Monday.
