The realm of dance has always had a significant influence on fashion trends, with the ballet flat being a timeless staple in the wardrobes of fashionistas. From iconic brands like Ferragamo to emerging designers like Simone Rocha, the ballet flat has made a strong comeback in recent years. This classic style, popularized by It-girls such as Alexa Chung and Kate Moss in the 2010s, has once again taken center stage in the fashion world with modern twists like ballet sneakers, loafers, and heels.

One brand that has played a key role in the revival of the ballet flat is the French label Repetto, favored by the likes of Lily-Rose Depp. However, before the ballet flat became synonymous with modern fashion trends, it had an unexpected ambassador in the form of legendary musician Serge Gainsbourg. In the 1970s, Gainsbourg was often seen sporting Repetto’s Zizi style, a jazz shoe named after dancer Zizi Jeanmaire. Today, visitors can admire a pair of Gainsbourg’s beloved Repettos at Maison Gainsbourg, a museum dedicated to the late singer in Paris.

The ballet flat also draws inspiration from the classic Derby shoe silhouette, with its origins rooted in European history. Whether attributed to the 14th Earl of Derby or Russian army officer Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, the Derby shoe has evolved from a practical battlefield shoe to a stylish everyday essential. The Derby’s sleek and flexible design has caught the eye of prominent fashion houses like Jacquemus and Lemaire, who have incorporated the lace-up style into their collections. Most recently, Celine showcased Derby shoes in their collection, reflecting a fusion of French sophistication and American prep.

As fashion continues to evolve, the ballet flat and Derby shoe remain timeless choices that effortlessly blend elegance with comfort. Whether twirling on the dance floor or strutting down the runway, these classic styles are here to stay, offering a perfect balance of style and functionality for the modern fashion enthusiast.
